Nanotechnology
According to its formal definition, nanotechnology (or also known as nanotech) is a science that deals with the study, control, development and alteration of structures of less than 100 nanometers (one nanometer is a billionth of a meter; one meter measures roughly 3 feet). These structures are also called nanoparticles. According to one of the field’s leading scientists, Dr Eric Drexler, “Nanoscale science and technology includes the frontiers of chemistry, materials, medicine, and computer hardware — the research that enables the continuing technology revolution.”
History of Nanotechnology
This field of scientific research was first named “nanotechnology” by scientists at the Tokyo Science University. They defined it in the late 1970s as the “process of separation, consolidation, and deformation of materials by one atom or by one molecule.”
Unlike any other science field, nanotechnology has crossed the boundaries between chemistry, physics, biology, and information technology, making nanotechnology research a true interdisciplinary science and innovative field that, if it achieves the potential scientists foresee, can actually revolutionize our entire lives.
Since the late 1970s, the use of nanotechnology has brought major improvements to the field of medicine — especially cancer diagnostics and DNA research, the auto industry, food processing, water purification, and more.
Nanotechnology News
Innovative nanotechnology projects are initiated every day, and each of them has the potential of bringing in a “nano revolution” to the world of science. The National Nanotechnology Initiative is a US governmental agency that was established to oversee and coordinate all research and development in nanotechnology funded through governmental grants.
On their website, you can find the latest information regarding all ongoing and future nanotechnology projects funded through the US government. You can also find the latest nanotechnology breakthroughs as well as the recent nanotechnology articles published in Science Daily, one of the most popular science publications for the general public. If you are interested in breakthrough articles, here you can find a list of the most interesting articles published each year since 2006 up to the present time.
